Kent Hughes' Most Impressive Decision Confirmed: Another First Overall Pick is Officially in the Organization
We all know that the Canadiens are still in a rebuilding phase, and recent losses have only reminded us of this. We must look to the future. The future on the blue line looks promising with young talents like Guhle, Barron, Harris, and Xhekaj already with the main club.
There are several promising players in Laval, including Mailloux, Struble, and Trudeau. There's also our latest first-round pick Reinbacher. That makes eight promising defenders under 25 years old. There is a 9th defender who is considered by many as a gem, his name is Lane Hutson.
The Canadiens' 2022 draft class includes Slafkovsky, Mesar, Beck, and Hutson. It is reasonable to believe that the small defender could be a real steal at the 62nd pick. Many experts seem to believe this, as Eric Engels stated during his appearance on The Sick podcast with Tony Marinaro.
"I think the best player of the 2022 draft was selected at the 62nd pick." – Eric Engels
This is very encouraging for Canadiens fans. Some may say he's a small defender who will struggle to impose himself physically against the bigger and stronger players of the NHL.
Former Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks player had a comment that might alleviate some concerns. Antoine Roussel had this to say about Lane Hutson during his appearance on 98.5 Sports, "Les Amateurs de Sports" with Mario Langlois:
"Everyone talks about his small size, but Quinn Hughes is also small. A small player who holds his own against big guys, I'll take him for sure!" - Antoine Roussel
Lane Hutson was just named player of the week in the NCAA.
"For the second time this season, Lane Hutson, a sophomore defenseman from Boston University's men's ice hockey team, was named Hockey East Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Hutson was outstanding in a weekend split against the then No. 3/4-ranked University of North Dakota, highlighting a historic performance on Saturday. Hutson scored the first three goals of the game for the Terriers, completing his first collegiate hat trick, including two goals within 2 minutes and 8 seconds in the late second period to erase a 3-1 deficit. Hutson also scored on Friday during the 3-2 victory to finish the series with four goals in total. - BOSTON UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS"
Of course, we shouldn't panic and put too much pressure on him. We might have a special player on our hands. Let's not rush things and be patient.
Here are some highlights of Lane Hutson #20 with his team, the Boston University Terriers in the NCAA. You can also check out another CH prospect Luke Tuch #11 and one of the top prospects for the next draft Macklin Celebrini #71, who also play for Boston University.
